Breaking news: Pasadena police Chief Barney Melekian to resign

Barney Melekian, who has headed the Pasadena PD since 1996 tendered his resignation this afternoon, according to sources at City Hall.

Melekian is not leaving law enforcement, instead he is headed to a gig with the U.S. Department of Justice in its COPS program.
The chief guided law enforcement policy in the city through the aftermath of the 1993 Halloween Homicides. His flair for community policing lad to a different approach to the city’s gang problem and in some ways lessened the threat many Pasadena citizens faced in the early 90s.
His political ability earned him a brief stint as interim city manager.
Cmdr. Chris Vicino took over in Mekelian’s absence. It’s likely he’ll return in that capacity in coming weeks.
