MONTEBELLO, Calif. (CBS) ― Police were searching for the driver of a pickup truck who struck and killed an 84-year-old woman as she walked her dog in the Los Angeles suburb of Montebello.

Police Lt. Brian Bart said 84-year-old Norma Lambo was struck at 6:12 p.m. Monday and pronounced dead at the scene. The driver kept going after the crash.

Friends and loved ones said Lambo was well-loved and respected for her generosity in the Montebello community. The victim was the widow of former Montebello City Clerk Andrew T. Lambo.

The pickup was described as a white Chevrolet Silverado extended cab with two doors, a tinted back window, chrome rims and a chrome front bumper that was apparently damaged in the crash and was last seen dragging on the street.

“Norma”

When I was a child, I now happily remember her pinching my cheeks whenever she would see me and tell my how much of a good boy I was. I remember saying at the time how much I did not like it, but looking back now as I write this those days will be solely missed. When you look back at all the people in your life, I don’t know if we truly realize how much of an impact they bring to us. I know how much of an impact this must be having on family and friends of the community. I wish all the best to those who grieve.

Alex, my family has been trying to contact Socorro. Please e-mail me at j_taylor621 @yahoo.com for more information. We are having a Candle Light Vigil for Norma on the Corner of Alfred and Jefferson streets in Montebello where she was hit on FRIDAY OCT 9th at 7:45pm. The funeral service information will be announced tomorrow.

Thank you we have been desperately trying to contact Socorro, if she wants to attend she can stay with us while she is here.

My deepest sympathies to Norma's family. I remember Norma and Andy well, as they were friends of the family while I was growing up. We've all moved from Montebello and I'm in Arizona so can't attend services. My mom isn't well and can't attend, but our prayers are with you.

Norma was a great actor. I spent many years with her on the local stage. She was always so kind and sweet to me (and everyone else). She loved generously, and was loved back. She would always tell me how handsome I was. I am so saddened by this tragic news...this is a great loss to the earth. I will miss her terribly, but know that I will see her again.

I met the Lambo's in 1976 at their store near the corner of Beverly & 4th St. I was just a kid working at the KFC but I was deeply touched by the Lambo's kindness. I hope that God will comfort her children and immediate family!! My prayers are there for you all!! Vince
