WHITTIER -- A woman was struck by a car and badly injured Friday in an unincorporated county area near Whittier, authorities said.
The crash occurred about 6:35 p.m. on Imperial Highway at Burgess Avenue, California Highway Patrol officer Francisco Villalobos said.
The woman, who was estimated to be in her 20s, was not breathing and had only a faint pulse when rescuers arrived, Los Angeles County Fire Department Capt. Tom Ray said.
Firefighters rushed her to Whittier Hospital with injuries the captain described as "grave."
The car involved remained at the scene and the driver was unhurt, officials said.
The cause of the crash was being investigated by the Santa Fe Springs office of the CHP.
