A teenage boy apparently shot himself in the leg by accident Sunday in an unincorporated county area near Whittier, authorities said.
The incident was reported about 6:20 p.m. in the 13400 block of Beaty Avenue, sheriff's and fire officials said.
The shooting remained under investigation late Sunday, however it initially appeared that 17-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the leg, Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. Mark Wilkins said.
A gun was found at the scene, though deputies were still working to find out who the weapon belonged to, the lieutenant said.
The boy was expected to survive the injury, he added.
