PASADENA -- Coroner's officials released the name Saturday of an Altadena man who died after being struck by a Gold Line train.
Michael Flowers, 24, was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision on the Gold Line tracks at Del Mar Avenue, between Raymond Avenue and Arroyo Parkway, about 5:40 a.m. Friday, Los Angeles County Department of Coroner's Investigator Jim Blacklock said.
Officials had not yet determined if the incident was intentional or an accident, he added.
The southbound train had just left the Del Mar Station when Flowers, who was walking on the sidewalk, stepped in front of the train, Gold Line officials said.
No one on the train was hurt, officials added.
According to Gold Line officials, all of the safety devices at the crossing were operating correctly.

Heavenly Father, eternal God, hear our prayers for Your son MichaelFlowers whom You have called from this life to Yourself. Grant him light, happiness, and peace. Let him pass in safety through the gates of death, and live forever with all Your saints in the light You promised to Abraham and to all his descendants in faith. Guard him from all harm and on... See More that great day of resurrection and reward raise him up with all Your saints. Pardon his sins and give him eternal life in Your kingdom. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen...

I am shocked and dismayed at the callous disregard for accurate reporting displayed by the Pasadena Star News concerning the tragic death of Michael Flowers, who was struck and killed by a Metro Gold Line train in Pasadena on Friday last.

Contrary to the report in the Star News that he was a "transient" in his 30's, Michael was a 24 year old honor student at Moorehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, where he maintained a sterling 4.0 grade point index. Home for the Summer to relax and enjoy time with his family, Michael was beloved by all who knew him. And it was a privilege to be Michael's friend, his warm laughter always drawing you in and making you feel that you were the most important person in the world for him at that moment.

Why did the Star News feel the need to imply that Michael's death was suicide, and that he was a mere "transient" and probably drunk, as if anyone at such a heartbreaking moment should be characterized that way? Does the Star News believe that all young Black men who suffer such a tragic fate while their identity is temporarily unknown can most easily be labeled as intoxicated bums who were likely suicidal? What a disgrace that such a description should be hung onto anyone when a little more time and investigation would have revealed the true facts about this fine and much loved young man!

We may never know all the facts about Michael's demise, but let your readers know that this tragic accident took away from us a glowing exemplar of everything a young black man should be. Michael Flowers lost two lives: the one he had and the one he would have had, full of promise as it was. His family and friends are devastated by their loss. May all who knew and loved Michael Flowers find peace.

Yours sincerely,

Michelle King

I would like to say that my heart goes out to the family, friends, and co-workers, school mates and all that were close to the deceased Michael L Flowers II. May God continue to strenghten each of you as the days go by,and continue to keep the angels watching over you all day and all night. God is a God of love and understanding. God he cares, he knows the pain and grief that all are going through with the loss of such a precious son, brother,Grandson, nephew, cousin and friend a young man loved by all. Words, cards, condolences, and all the love shown at a time like this is good, however, it will not replace your beloved son. Just hold on to God's unchanging hands because at a time like this he is the only one who can bring you through. May peace and Gods love abide with you all. God Bless! May we understand that absent from the body is present with the Lord. I will contiue to pray for the family of Michael and Jerri Flowers.
