Man crashes car into tree following Alhambra police chase
ALHAMBRA -- A 21-year-old man was hospitalized in critical condition Saturday after crashing an allegedly stolen car into a tree after being chased by police, authorities said.
The incident began just before midnight Friday as officers were responding to a report of a car theft at Marengo Avenue and Main Street, Alhambra police Sgt. Gary Le Guard said in a written statement.
Police spotted the car and pursued it briefly before officers lost sight of it, the sergeant said.
As police were searching the area, they received word that a car had crashed into a tree on Meridian Avenue, just south of Hellman Avenue, Le Guard said.
They found the same vehicle they had been chasing had struck the tree, police said, critically injuring the 21-year-old driver.
Officials did not release his name Saturday.
The man was expected to be arrested on suspicion of auto theft, police said, though he had not been booked Saturday afternoon.
