Gang members convicted of Pico Rivera teen’s slaying

PICO RIVERA — A Norwalk Superior Court jury convicted two Pico Rivera gang members of first-degree murder Friday for the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old Pico Rivera boy.
The jury also found true the special allegation that Edward Ortega, 23, and Dennis Flores, 20, committed the Nov. 19, 2009 murder of Erick Roche Jr. for the benefit of a criminal street gang — Rivera 13, according to court officials.
They are due back in Norwalk Superior Court for sentencing on Feb. 25.
Roche was found shot to death near the entrance to an alley in the 6400 block of Rosemead Boulevard in Pico Rivera.
Flores confronted Roche and asked him what gang he was affiliated with, a homicide detective testified during a preliminary hearing.
When Roche replied that he was not in a gang, Ortega shot him twice, the detective said.
Both killers face the possibility of life behind bars when sentenced later this month.
