Arcadia police officer honored for saving choking 6-year-old boy

ARCADIA — City officials honored an Arcadia police officer Tuesday with the “Life Saving Award,” for his role in saving a choking 6-year-old boy late last year.
Officer Steve Castillo received the award from Arcadia Police Chief Bob Sanderson during a city council meeting.
The award stemmed from a Dec. 26 call of a child choking in the 1000 block Loma Lisa Lane, Capt. Bob Guthrie said in a written statement.
“Officer Castillo discovered that the boy had a pulse, but was not breathing, unresponsive, and had skin that was blue in color,” the captain said. “Officer Castillo administered several back blows in an attempt to dislodge the object blocking the child’s airway.”
Castillo ultimately was able to clear a portion of the throat obstruction from the child’s throat by hand, allowing him to breathe until paramedics were able to fully remove the obstruction, police said.
“The boy was transported to Huntington Memorial Hospital for treatment,” Guthrie said. “He was later released from the hospital, and has since made a full recovery.”
