Suspect arrested in 2009 Santa Fe Springs killing

SANTA FE SPRINGS — Police Thursday arrested a longtime suspect in the stabbing death of a 19-year-old Santa Fe Springs woman found fatally stabbed inside an apartment in late 2009.
Manuel Duron, 28, was booked on suspicion of murdering his then-girlfriend, Crystal Coronel, Dec. 21, 2009, in an apartment in the 8200 block of Santa Fe Springs Road, Whittier police spokesman Officer Mike Dekowski said.
Whittier police initially jailed Duron the day after Coronel’s body was discovered stabbed to death, however he was released after prosecutors determined there was insufficient evidence for a case.
After further review, Dekowski said, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office determined a a murder charge was warranted.
On Thursday, “Our detectives received information on his whereabouts,” Dekowski said.
He was arrested at a Home Depot store in Anaheim, where he was looking for work, without incident, he said.
Dekowski said investigators were eager to bring justice to Coronel’s killer.
“We want to bring the family some closure,” he said.
Coronel’s mother declined to comment Friday.
According to sheriff’s booking records, Duron was being held in lieu of $1 million bail and was due for arraignment Monday in Whittier Superior Court.
