The teen was spotted by an officer about 3:15 p.m. on the right shoulder of the 10 Freeway at the 605 Freeway, CHP Sgt. John Escobedo said.
The officer made contact with the boy, who cooperated but did not speak, the sergeant said.
Escobedo said the officer brought the boy back to the CHP's Baldwin Park office to try to find his family.
very sensitive to the circumstances.
Investigators soon realized that the boy matched the description of a teen whose family had reported he'd wandered away from his El Monte home 45 minutes earlier, Escobedo said. Officials then reunited the boy with his family.
El Monte police and the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services are investigating.
