ARCADIA -- A 16-year-old girl died and another was left seriously injured Sunday after they were struck by a car while crossing Duarte Road, authorities said.
The collision was reported about 6:40 p.m. in the 600 block of West Duarte Road, Arcadia police Lt. Bob Anderson said in a written statement.
The girls were crossing the street on foot when they were struck by a car being driven by a 20-year-old Arcadia man, police said.
One of the girls died from her injuries, while the other was rushed to Huntington Hospital in Pasadena with serious injuries, the lieutenant said.
The driver of the car was not arrested late Sunday.
The cause of the collision was being investigated by the Arcadia police Major Accident Investigation Team. Any witnesses are encouraged to contact Detective Hale at 626-574-5161.

Were they walking on a marked crosswalk? Were they walking against a red light? There are a lot of factors that have to be considered in these accidents.

Pedestrians should be more careful in crossing the streets and drivers, likewise, should be alert for pedestrians who might suddenly cross.

I hope the girl's condition will improve.

I saw the aftermath of this accident and they WERE walking in a marked crosswalk (saw takeout strewn all over the floor that must've belonged to the girls). However, this crosswalk is not at an intersection or traffic light. If you push a button, there is a light that will flash yellow for cars to stop and pedestrians to cross and also flashing lights on the floor. It is pretty hard to miss if you are driving along the street. I agree that pedestrians should take the initiative to look for cars when crossing the street instead of expecting cars to stop.

While it is tragic what happened to these two girls, i also see people just walking into crosswalks without looking and on their cell phones, now i know that pedestrians have the right of way, but they also must be careful too, after all you just cant stop on a dime, and if theres someone right behind you it will cause a wreck, they just walk into the street and dont ever look, because they think the cars will magically stop for them

Dear God, I pray for the family members and friends of the girls. I pray that that they will feel your presence and be comforted by your loving arms. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured girl. I also pray for the driver. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
