Detectives investigate shooting death in South San Gabriel

SOUTH SAN GABRIEL — A young man died early Saturday after he was shot in a possibly gang-related attack near his home, authorities said.
The name of the man was not released Saturday pending positive identification and notification of his family, Los Angeles County sheriff’s and coroner’s officials said. He was initially described as a 24-year-old Rosemead man.
The fatal shooting took place at 1:15 a.m. at Orange Street and Grand View Avenue in the unincorporated county area of South San Gabriel, sheriff’s Sgt. Diane Hecht said in a written statement.
The man had just left his home on foot and walked around the corner when “multiple gunshots were heard,” Sgt. Bill Marsh of the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau said.
“Residents of the area came out and discovered the victim lying on the street,” Marsh said. He had been shot multiple times in the upper torso.
He was rushed to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, where he fought for his life for more than two hours, but was ultimately pronounced dead about 4 a.m.
Deputies from the sheriff’s Temple Station arrived at the scene within a minute of the shooting and stopped a car nearby that matched a description given by a witness of a vehicle involved in the shooting, Marsh said.
The driver of that car was being detained for questioning Saturday, he said, though he had not been arrested.
Marsh referred to the driver as a “person of interest” pending further investigation, and detectives were looking into apparent gang ties on his part.
Detectives were also looking into whether or not the victim had ties to gangs, he said.
The medium-caliber gun authorities believe was used in the shooting was not immediately found, the sergeant added.
