Teen suspected of failed robbery on Whittier’s Greenway Trail

WHITTIER — Police arrested a 16-year-old Whittier boy Saturday on suspicion of trying, but failing, to rob a man on the Greenway Trail.
A 55-year-old Whittier man was walking on the trail between Hadley and Bailey streets about 9:15 a.m. when he passed a teenager who was also walking on the trail, Whittier police Lt. Carlos Solorza said.
The teen ran up behind the man and grabbed him in a bear hug, Solorza said. The would-be robber then motioned as if he had a weapon as he demanded money.
“The victim was able to break free before the suspect got any property and ran to a nearby business for assistance,” the lieutenant said.
An officer soon located the suspect walking near Whittier High School and arrested the boy after a brief foot chase, he said.
He was booked on suspicion of attempted robbery.
