Toddler fatally struck by mother’s car in Altadena

ALTADENA — The community is rallying around the family of a 2-year-old girl Altadena girl accidentally killed when her mother backed over her in the family driveway, officials said.
Catherine Lopez died at a hospital less than an hour after the incident, which occurred about 11:20 p.m. Wednesday in the 300 block of Woodbury Road, Los Angeles County Department of Coroner Lt. David Smith said. The death was ruled accidental.
The girl’s mother, a 23-year-old woman, left the door open when she exited her home to move her 2002 Land Rover Freelander, which was parked in a narrow driveway, California Highway Patrol officials said in a written statement.
“(The mother) did not realize her daughter had followed her outside of the house and when she went to back the vehicle, she did not see (Catherine Lopez) running behind the vehicle,” the statement said.
The girl was struck and suffered major head and neck injuries, according to the CHP.
Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich was moved by the situation and has offered to pay for the cost of Catherine Lopez’s funeral out-of-pocket, officials said.
A series of fundraisers are planned in the area, and donations to help the family pay for medical bills and other expensed are being accepted at the sheriff’s Altadena Station.
