WEST COVINA — Two men were arrested on suspicion of robbery, carjacking, evading police and assault with a deadly weapon early Sunday following a brief pursuit, authorities said.
Maurice Berry, 40, of Long Beach and Ronald Scott, 25, of Gardena were being held without bail, according to Los Angeles County sheriff’s booking records.
Police received a report of a robbery about 3:30 a.m. at a 7-Eleven store in the 1300 block of South Azusa Avenue, West Covina police Lt. Richard Bell said.
The robbers entered the store with a handgun, demanded cash and fled, he said.
Officers did not immediately find the suspects, police said, however a second robbery with similar suspect descriptions was reported about 6:30 a.m. at a gas station at La Puente Road and Nogales Street, officials said.
Officials spotted a car that matched the description driving on Amar Road, Bell said, and a pursuit began.
The car continued for several  blocks before crashing at slow speed into a house on Veronica Avenue, police said. The driver tried to back up the vehicle, striking a police car but not injuring any officers.
Scott ran into the house and was immediately arrested, police said.  The home was believed to be owned by an acuaintance of the suspects.
Berry fled into the surrounding neighborhood, and was found and bitten by a police dog about an hour later, Bell said.
The car the men were riding had had been reported carjacked from Long Beach the night before, police added.
According to booking records, Berry and Scott were both do for arraignment Tuesday in West Covina Superior Court.
