Trial delayed in hit-and-run death of 84-year-old Montebello woman

LOS ANGELES — The trial for a man charged with vehicular manslaughter in connection with the fatal hit-and-run of an elderly Montebello woman has been delayed.
The trial for David Loera, 38, was scheduled to begin Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, but was continued to July 27, court officials said.
He’s accused of fatally striking Norma Lambo, 84, of Montebello and her dog, Barney, at Jefferson Avenue and Alfred Court in Montebello on Oct. 5, 2009.
After Lambo was struck by a pickup truck, officials said, witnesses told police a passenger got out of the vehicle and freed Lambo’s walker from the front of the truck before getting back in. The truck then fled the scene.
Police arrested Loera after detectives found his truck, which was believed to be involved in the crash, being repaired at a local auto body shop.
Lambo was a longtime Montebello resident who took an active role in the community.
She co-founded the city’s “Ashiya Sister Cities” organization and served as its president several times.
Loera is free on bail pending trial.
