Hiker rescued from Eaton Canyon

ALTADENA -- A hiker was flown out of Eaton Canyon by helicopter Sunday after suffering an ankle injury, authorities said.
The hiker, a 22-year-old man, was hiking about 5 p.m. between the first and second waterfalls of Eaton Canyon, just north of Altadena, when he suffered an injury to his ankle, Pasadena Fire Department spokeswoman Lisa Derderian said.
"I'm not sure of the extent of the injury," she said, but the hiker was unable to get himself out of the canyon. "He called for help on his cell phone."
Rescuers from the Pasadena Fire Department, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and Los Angeles County Fire Department found the hiker in about 45 minutes, then made arrangements to have him flown to an area hospital, Derderian said.
As the summer continues and more people decide to head to Eaton Canyon for recreation, Derderian urged outdoors enthusiasts to be prepared. A cell phone and plenty of water are items that should be carried.
Hikers should be especially careful on the tough terrain near the waterfalls, she added. "That's where we see most of our injuries."
