Second victim of Whittier house fire dies

WHITTIER — An elderly woman who was badly injured in a Friday house fire that killer her husband has also died, coroner’s officials said.
The names of both victims were not available Saturday pending positive identification and notification of family members, Los Angeles County Department of Coroner’s Lt. Larry Dietz said.
The man, believed to be in his late-80s, died shorty after the blaze, which was reported about 12:40 p.m. Friday at a home in the 10500 block of Orange Drive, according to coroner’s and fire officials.
His wife, believed to be in her mid-80s, was hospitalized with severe burns, officials said. Her death was reported to coroner’s officials Saturday morning.
A police officer who tried to rescue the elderly couple from their burning home was hospitalized for smoke inhalation but not seriously hurt.
The fire ignited in the couple’s bedroom and was initially suspected to be electrical in nature, though an investigation into the cause was ongoing.
