ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST — A man was suspected of drunken driving Saturday after his car plummeted 500 feet over the side Glendora Mountain Road, injuring himself and two passengers, authorities said.
The crash was reported just before 5:30 a.m. on Glendora Mountain Road, near Glendora Ridge Road, in the forest north of Glendora, according to California Highway Patrol logs.
The 1996 Ford Mustang was northbound on Glendora Mountain Road, traveling along with three other vehicles, CHP Officer Theodore Jolin said.
“At the time, the visibility was approximately 20 to 30 feet because of the fog up there,” the officer said.
The Mustang went over the side of the road and finally came to a rest about 500 feet down a steep embankment, Jolin said.
The driver, a man of about 20, was able to climb out of the vehicle and back to the road, officials said. His passengers, a man and woman who were also about 20 years old, had to be rescued from the wrecked car by members of the sheriff’s San Dimas Search and Rescue Team.
The passengers were flown to separate hospitals via helicopters, Jolin said. Their conditions were unclear Saturday afternoon.
The driver, whose name was not available, was hospitalized by ambulance with moderate injuries, officials said.
Officials noticed what appeared to be an odor of alcohol on the driver’s breath, Jolin said, and investigators ordered blood drawn at the hospital for testing.
