Knife-wielding man shot to death by police in Monterey Park

MONTEREY PARK — Police shot and killed a knife-wielding man early Wednesday after he threatened his mother, then lunged at officers with the blade, authorities said.
The dead man’s name was not released pending positive identification and notification of next of kin, coroner’s officials said.
Officers responded at 12:18 a.m. to a report of a family disturbance in the 200 block of North McPherrin Avenue, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Sgt. Harry Drucker said in a written statement.
Monterey Park police Lt. Jess Alvarado said a man called police to report his mother and his brother were locked in a room, and he heard his mother say, “Please don’t kill me.”
Police arrived to hear screams coming from a locked bedroom, Lt. Dave Coleman of the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau said.
“Upon kicking the door open the officers were confronted by the suspect who lunged at them with a large kitchen knife,” he said. “Fearing for their safety, an officer fired at the suspect fatally striking him.”
The woman was unhurt, officials said, and the knife was recovered at the scene.
Witnesses told police the man, who didn’t live there, showed up at the home about midnight.
The Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau is assisting Monterey Park police in the investigation.
