Man accused of robbing his mother arrested in Pico Rivera
PICO RIVERA -- Deputies Wednesday arrested a man they'd been seeking on suspicion of robbing his own mother at knifepoint earlier this week, authorities said.
Manuel Ortiz, 20, was booked on suspicion of robbery after a sheriff's sergeant spotted him at a local coffee shop, Lt. Bill Evans said. He's a transient known to frequent Pico Rivera.
He'd been sought since Monday, when he got into an argument with his mother at her home on Lindsey Avenue, then pushed her down and pulled a knife on her as he stole valuable from her house, Evans said.
Deputies spotted him in the 5400 block of Lindsey Avenue early Wednesday, but he eluded capture, officials said.
Later in the day, Sgt. Sgt. Debbie Gallego was handing out fliers in the area regarding Ortiz, Evans said.
She entered Barney's Coffee Shop, 4923 Rosemead Blvd., to drop off a flier when she noticed he was eating at the restaurant, the lieutenant said.
After a brief foot chase, deputies arrested Ortiz, Evans said. Valuables taken from his mother's home with him.
Citizens assisted by pointing out the direction he had run, Evans said, and a taxi driver flagged deputies down when Ortiz jumped into the back of his cab.
According to county booking records, Ortiz was being held in lieu of $135,000 bail and was due for arraignment Friday in Whittier Superior Court.
