Man killed, woman badly burned, police officer hospitalized after Whittier house fire
WHITTIER -- A man died, a woman was clinging to life with severe burns and a police officers was hospitalized with smoke inhalation following a house fire Friday, authorities said.
The blaze was first reported at 12:39 p.m. at 10513 Orange Drive, Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Quvondo Johnson said.
The man suffered apparent smoke inhalation and was pronounced dead at a hospital, Inspector Matt Levesque said. The woman was hospitalized in "extremely critical condition" with burns over about 50 percent of her body.
Both victims lived at the home and were estimated to be about 70 years old, officials said. Their relationship was not immediately clear.
A Whittier police officers was hospitalized as a precaution for smoke inhalation, officials said.
"He was attempting to remove one of the victims, but was overcome by the smoke," Levesque said.
Ultimately, firefighters had to remove the victims from the home, he said.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze, which was centered in a rear bedroom of the home, within 20 minutes, fire officials said.
The officials cause of the fire was under investigation, Levesque said, however it was initially believed to be related to an electrical malfunction.
