Officials: shooter claims self-defense in fatal Monrovia shooting

MONROVIA — No arrests had been made Saturday as detectives investigated a man’s claim that he shot his 62-year-old roommate to death in Monrovia out of self defense, officials said.
The fatal shooting took place about 5:20 a.m. Friday at a home in the 200 block of North Mayflower Avenue.
A 62-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity was not released pending notification of his family members, however investigators said he had moved into the home with a man and woman about two weeks ago.
“Basically, the residents are claiming self defense,” Lt. Mike Rosson of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau said.
According to a man and woman who live at the home, “He approached them while they were sleeping in their room in the early morning hours and made some statements which were threatening in nature,” Rosson said. Fearing for their safety, the startled man shot alleged intruder, he added.
Following the shooting, the shooter himself called 9-1-1 to report it, Rosson said.
Once their investigation is completed, detectives will turn over their finding to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, where prosecutors will decide whether any charges are to be filed in connection with the shooting.
