Man beaten during Azusa robbery; teen suspected arrested

AZUSA — Azusa police arrested a teenager and sought others after a man was beaten with a metal pipe and robbed of his bicycle late Wednesday, police said.
The suspect was described as a 15-year-old Azusa boy, Azusa police Sgt. Xavier Torres said in a written statement.
A group of teens carried out the attack and robbery shortly before 9 p.m. at an apartment complex in the 600 block of South Donna Beth Avenue, the sergeant said.
During the robbery, they assaulted (a 21-year-old Azusa man) with metal pipes and fists and stole his bicycle,” Torres said. “A bystander who attempted to intervene was also assaulted by the suspects.”
Officers saw the suspects running from the area on arrival, officials said, and were able to chase down and capture the 15-year-old.
The victim of the robbery suffered, “significant injuries to his head and face” and was taken to a hospital for treatment, Torres said. The good Samaritan who intervened suffered minor injuries and was not hospitalized.
One of the pipes used in the attack and the victim’s bicycle were recovered at the scene, police said. The teen suspect was taken to a juvenile detention facility.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Azusa police at 626-812-3200.
