West Covina man suspected of abandoning infant in parking lot

WEST COVINA — A West Covina man pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges of assaulting his girlfriend, taking the couple’s 3-week-old baby and abandoning the infant in a parking lot, officials said.
Ulises Carillo Lares, 18, was booked on suspicion of domestic violence and child endangerment in connection with Friday’s incident, which began in the 2000 block of East of Shamwood Street, West Covina police Lt. Tommy Garcia said.
Officers were called out to a report of a domestic disturbance about 4:50 p.m., the lieutenant said. They encountered a hysterical 18-year-old woman, who had suffered minor injuries in an apparent assault, yelling that, “He has my baby.”
Within minutes, police found the 3-week-old girl abandoned in a nearby parking lot and arrested Lares as he was on foot in the area, Garcia said. The baby was not injured.
Lares was due back in Pomona Superior Court Jan. 9 for a hearing, court officials said.
