UPDATE: School locked down in La Puente during search for suspect

LA PUENTE — Officials placed an elementary school on lockdown as a precaution Friday as they searched the area for a man who ran from deputies during a traffic stop.
The incident began shortly after 10 a.m. when a deputy pulled over a man for a traffic violation near Amar Road and Sunkist Drive, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. Arthur Scott said.
“The occupant of the vehicle got out and ran, reaching for his waistband,” the lieutenant said. Fearing the man may be armed, deputies set up a search perimeter and placed nearby J.E. Van Wig Elementary School, 1151 North Van Wig Ave., on a lockdown.
The search was called off about two hours later after the suspect had not been found, and the school lockdown was lifted, authorities said.
