Sheriff’s deputy involved in crash in Pasadena while responding to chase

PASADENA — A sheriff’s patrol car collided with a civilian vehicle early Saturday as the deputy was responding to a pursuit, sending the deputy to the hospital with a broken foot and causing minor injuries to the civilian, authorities said.
The pursuit ultimately ended with the arrest of an allegedly drunken Pasadena-area gang member with an AK-47 assault rifle, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Sgt. Randy Tuinstra said.
The incident began when deputies tried to stop a car for suspicion of drunken driving in Altadena, but the car failed to pull over, initiating a chase, the sergeant said.
As a deputy was responding to join the chase with emergency lights and sirens on, his patrol car collided with a civilian vehicle at the intersection of Orange Grove Boulevard and Raymond Avenue, Pasadena police Lt. Diego Torres said.
The deputy suffered injuries including a broken foot, and the civilian suffered apparently minor injuries, Tuinstra said.
The crash remained under investigation, however initial witness statement indicated the civilian vehicle had run a red light prior to the crash, Torres said.
Fellow deputies continued pursuing the fleeing car, which finally pulled over in Pasadena.
The driver was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, evading police and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm — an AK-47 rifle, Tuinstra said.
His name was not released as officials continued investigating the circumstances of the arrest, including what the suspect — an alleged Pasadena-area gang member — may have been doing, or planning to do, with the weapon, Tuinstra said.
*UPDATE – A passenger in the car was also arrested, though it was not immediately clear on suspicion of what crime.
