UPDATED: Ex-probation officer serial rapist sentenced for 1995 Glendora crime

GLENDORA — A former probation officer serving time for two rapes was recently sentenced to 15 years in prison for the 1995 kidnapping and rape of a woman in Glendora.
DNA helped solve the cold case and pointed the finger at 53-year-old Earnest Pettway, formerly of Pasadena.
Glendora police Lt. Brian Summers said Pettway took a plea deal and was sentenced by a Pomona Superior Court judge on May 15.
Summers said the 15 years will be served consecutively with Pettway’s prior sentences of 25 and 46 years for similar crimes in Santa Monica and Los Angeles.
The Glendora assault happened July of 1995 as a 30-year-old woman was cleaning the offices of the National Hot Rod Association, 2035 E. Financial Way, police said.
“Just after midnight, as she was exiting the building, the suspect appeared out of the bushes with a handgun and ordered the victim to undress,” Glendora police said in a written statement.
After the attack, Summers said the woman drove home and called police immediately.
Detectives were left with few clues to follow until 15 years later, when DNA provided them with a break in the case.
“In September of 2010, Glendora police detectives received notification from CHOP, the Cold Hit Outcome Program that a DNA match to suspect Pettway was found after running cold case DNA through the state data bank,” Glendora police said in a written statement. “Glendora detectives re-opened the 15 year old case, interviewing the suspect in prison.
“Pettway denied being involved, however a comparison DNA sample obtained by Glendora detectives from Pettway was an exact match to the evidence collected from the sexual assault in 1995,” the police statement said.
Summers said Pettway was convicted of the Santa Monica and Los Angeles cases in 1997.
Pettway had worked as a Los Angeles County probation officers for 11 years prior to his arrest for raping a female jogger at gunpoint in Santa Monica in November of 1995, according to a report published at the time by the Los Angeles Times. He had spent his last four years as a probation officer at a juvenile camp in Santa Monica.
Detectives subsequently linked Pettway to a similar attack in Los Angeles.

Man suspected of massive vandalism at Pasadena city building

PASADENA — A man was arrested after he allegedly broke into a building housing the city’s public health department and two clinics then wreaked havoc inside Tuesday night.
Pasadena police Lt. Pete Hettema said the man smashed windows, broke into different rooms, threw laptops out windows, spread printer toner all over the place and set off fire extinguishers.
Police didn’t have damage estimates yet but expect it to be high.
The burglary in the 1800 block of North Fair Oaks Avenue was reported at 9:51 p.m.
A cleaning crew saw a man use a bicycle to break into the building then drag the bicycle inside, Hettema said.
“He’s still breaking windows when we get there,” the lieutenant said.
Officers surrounded the building and ordered the man to come out. He surrendered.
James Ray, 20, was arrested on suspicion of commercial burglary and vandalism, Lt. Jari Faulkner said. He was believed to be a transient with ties to the Pasadena area.
He was taken to a hospital because his hands were bruised and bleeding, apparently from striking the glass windows, before being booked into jail, police said.
According to county booking records, Ray was being held in lieu of $20,000 pending his initial court appearance.

Jury recommends death for convict in Jamiel Shaw slaying

LOS ANGELES — A jury has recommended a death sentence for a gang member convicted of killing a standout Los Angeles High School football player for carrying a red Spider-Man backpack.
Jurors reportedly reached their verdict Wednesday in the penalty phase of trial for Pedro Espinoza. The same panel convicted Espinoza of murdering 17-year-old Jamiel Shaw on May 9.
Prosecutors say Shaw was gunned down in 2008 because of his red backpack, the signature color of the Bloods gang, and Espinoza assumed he was a gang rival. Espinoza has a tattoo near his left ear that is short for “Blood killer.”
Shaw was shot twice, in the abdomen and head, as he was talking to his girlfriend on the phone near his home.
Sentencing has been scheduled for Sept. 21.

Three suspected in Arcadia burglary

ARCADIA — Police arrested a Duarte man and man and woman from La Puente Wednesday on suspicion of breaking into a Panorama Drive home.
Brian Magallanes, 19, of Duarte, Eulises Andres, 19, of La Puente and Stephanie Iraheta, 18, of La Puente were booked on suspicion of burglary, according to Arcadia police Sgt. Stan Flores.
The incident began when a resident of the 900 block of Panorama Drive called police to report a suspicious man had knocked at his door and asked for someone who did not live there, the sergeant said. The resident also spotted a parked car that appeared to be connected to the suspicious man.
Police responded to the neighborhood and located the car, where the driver, Iraheta, was detained, Flores said.
Moments later, a second person called from the 1000 block of Panorama Drive to report confronting two male intruders as they exited the back door of his house, the sergeant said.
“The two rand down his driveway toward the street, at which time they saw the police officers,” Flores said. The two subjects then ran back into the rear yard and jumped over a wall.”
Officers searched the area and ultimately found Magallanes and Andres in a nearby construction site.
It was not immediately clear what, if anything, was taken from the burgled home in the the 1000 block of Panorama Drive, police said.

Couple deemed ‘persons of interest’ in 2011 Pasadena slaying

PASADENA — Police have named a parolee and his girlfriend as ‘persons of interest’ in the shooting death of a 43-year-old Altadena man in late 2011 as they await trial on unrelated drug charges, officials said.
Chauncey Hollis, 40, whose last known address was in Monrovia, and Jewel Taitt, 46, of Pasadena were arrested Friday and booked on suspicion of murder, as well as possession of cocaine and marijuana for sales, Pasadena police Lt. Tracey Ibarra said.
But police ultimately did not ask prosecutors to file murder charges against the two, Ibarra said. “We’re seeking additional evidence for prosecution.”
They remained jailed in connection with the drug case, and in the case of Hollis, alleged parole violation, she said.
Hollis was already being sought as a parolee who had absconded from supervision when he was first identified as a person of interest in the early-morning shooting, police said.
When officers searched a home in the same neighborhood as the killing where Hollis was believed to frequent, they discovered the marijuana and cocaine, Ibarra said.
The drugs were found, “as we were conducting a search warrant in connection with murder,” the said.
Hollis was never found until Friday, Ibarra said, though investigators had been in contact with Taitt.
Detectives stopped Hollis and Taitt and arrested them without incident after they were spotted driving through the east end of Pasadena Friday.
Few details were available regarding the circumstances of the fatal 2011 shooting, to which no eyewitnesses have been located, police said.
Police responded to reports of gunshots when they discovered bullet casings in the street at Marengo Avenue and Tremont Street, then found the fatally wounded victim lying between a fence and a wall at Marengo Avenue and Dearborn Street, officials said.
Witnesses did report seeing a vehicle leaving the area just after the attack, police added.
Hollis was believed to have ties to a Pasadena-area street gang, Ibarra said.
It was not clear Thursday what, if any, relationship existed among Hollis, Taitt and Santana, she said.
Because of his status as a parolee, Hollis was being held without bail pending his arraignment in Pasadena Superior Court, while Taitt was being held in lieu of $35,000 bail.
