Whittier man accused of trying to strangle woman with extension cord

WHITTIER — A 43-year-old man is in custody for allegedly trying to strangle his partner with an extension cord, police said Thursday.
William Farrell was arrested Wednesday night on suspicion of attempted murder and domestic abuse, according to Whittier police Sgt. Sam Reed.
At around 9 p.m. Wednesday, someone from the 10900 block of 1st Avenue called 9-1-1 aand dropped the phone.
Officers headed to the location where they found a screaming woman and a man standing next to her.
Reed said the man refused to step away from the woman. He was arrested.
The woman relayed to officers what happened earlier.
“He had told the victim he was going to kill her and had wrapped an extension cord around her neck,” Reed said.
She became unconscious, he added.
It wasn’t clear Thursday if Farrell is the victim’s husband or boyfriend.
Police said he was taken to a county jail. Sheriff’s online booking records show Farrell has a $1 million bail but doesn’t list what county jail he’s being housed or when he will be arraigned in court.
