GLENDORA — Firefighters late Saturday had all but extinguished a brush fire along the 210 Freeway that grew to eight acres in size, authorities said.
The blaze was first reported about 4:50 p.m. just north of the 210 Freeway and west of Sunflower Avenue, near the south end of South Hills Park, Los Angeles County Fire Department Dispatcher Supervisor Michael Pittman said.
Initial reports indicated the blaze had grown to 15 acres, however a helicopter survey performed late Saturday determined the actual size was 8 acres, Los Angeles County Fire Department Capt. Mark Savage said.
The first firefighters on-scene called for reinforcements as the fire was burning uphill in light to medium brush, Pittman said.
About 100 firefighters, with help from three water-dropping helicopters, had nearly contained the blaze about three hours later, officials said.
“There’s no active fire,” Savage said about 8 p.m.
But firefighters still had a lot of work ahead of them.

“We’ll be mopping up here all night long,” Savage said.
Officials were checking on possibly damage to cell phone sites, Savage said, however no structures were damaged or threatened by the fire, and no evacuations were ordered.
Investigators were summoned to the scene to look into the cause of the fire.

The fire prompted California Highway Patrol officials to issue a brief Sig Alert for the two right lanes of the westbound 210 Freeway.
