NORWALK — Deputies jailed a man who tried to carjack an off-duty police officer at gunpoint Saturday, authorities said.
Nicholas Andres, 20, of Norwalk was ultimately booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon following the 4 a.m. incident at Norwalk Boulevard and Cyclops Street, according to Los Angeles County sheriff’s Capt. Patrick Maxwell.
An off-duty South Gate police officer was driving north on Norwalk Boulevard in his personal car when two men stepped in front of his vehicle. The officer slowed his car to allow the men to cross the street.
“The two males stopped in his lane of travel and of the males pointed a handgun directly at him,” Maxwell said. “Fearing that the individuals were trying to stop him and take his vehicle, the off-duty officer accelerated around them and then called 9-1-1.”
Deputies from the sheriff’s Norwalk Station swarmed the area and spotted three men running on Cyclops Street, officials said.
During a search by deputies and K-9s, Andres was found hiding to the rear of a home in the 12200 block of Cyclops Street and surrendered without a struggle, the captain said.
Deputies also located a loaded, 9mm handgun in the area, he added.
The other two men seen running on Cyclops Street were not found.
Andres was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail pending his first court appearance, according to county booking records.
