Two suspected of Azusa bicycle robbery

AZUSA — Police jailed two men Friday for robbing another man of a bicycle.
Erick Armando Cruz, 22, of Monrovia and Adrian Joseph Salazar, 32, of Baldwin Park were booked on suspicion of robbery, Azusa police Sgt. Andy Sutcliffe said.
An Azusa man was standing with his bicycle near a convenience store in the 700 block of West Fifth Street about 8 p.m. when Cruz approached and asked about buying the bike, the sergeant said.
The owner of the bicycle agreed to let Cruz take a “test drive,” he said. A friend of the bicycle owner followed Cruz on his own bicycle.
When Cruz realized he was being followed, he confronted and threatened his pursuer, Sutcliffe said.
“He told the victim to back off and that he had a gun,” he said. “Simultaneously, he lifted his shirt and reached into his waistband.”
An Azusa police officer spotted Cruz getting into a car being driven by Salazar minutes later and detained both men, Sutcliffe said. A replica firearm was found under the driver’s seat of the car, and both men were arrested on suspicion of robbery.
According to county booking records, Cruz and Salazar were being held in lieu of $50,000 bail each at the Azusa Police Department jail and were due for arraignment Tuesday in West Covina Superior Court.
