Man in coma after crashing car in Pomona during CHP pursuit

An alleged drunken driver remained hospitalized in a coma Thursday after he led authorities on chase on the 10 Freeway from El Monte to Pomona before crashing over the weekend, officials said.
Daniel Robison, 53, of Laguna Niguel, was rushed to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center for treatment following the 9:22 p.m. crash Sunday on the 10 Freeway at the 71 Freeway, California Highway Patrol Sgt. Spencer Ammons said in a written statement. He was expected to be arrested when his medical condition permitted it.
The incident kicked off when a driver saw Robison driving a 2010 Merecedes-Benz in the area of the 101 and 110 freeways and reported him as a possible drunken driver.
“Mr. Robinson was located by CHP eastbound eastbound I-10 in the City of El Monte and a pursuit ensued,” Ammons said.
Officers chased him east on the freeway into Pomona, where officials said he tried to transition onto the southbound 71 Freeway.
Robison’s car left the roadway and travelled about 75 yards along the gore point before slamming into the underside of the southbound 57 Freeway transition road to the eastbound 10 Freeway, he said.
The crash left Robison unconscious, Ammons said, and officers pulled him from the smoking wreckage of his Mercedes. He was then flown to the hospital by helicopter.
“Driving under the influence is being investigated as a factor in this collision, and the collision remains under investigation,” Ammons said.
