PASADENA — Firefighters extinguished an attic fire and rescued a house full of pet dogs and birds Saturday following an afternoon blaze on Newport Avenue, officials said.

Three dogs and a four caged birds were rescued from the fire, which was reported just before 1 p.m. in the 1900 block of Newport Avenue, near Wyoming street, Pasadena Fire Department spokeswoman Lisa Derderian said.

Neighbors called 9-1-1 to report seeing smoke coming from the home, informing officials that the house contained pets and the residents were not home, she said.

“Upon arrival, the attic was well-involved in fire,” Derderian said. Firefighters extinguished the flames in about 20 minutes.

While battling the blaze, she said, firefighters rescued the dogs and birds.

A neighbor offered to care for the animals until the resident arrived, Derderian added.

The damage to the house and its contents was estimated at $110,000, officials said.

The fire was determined to have been caused by roofing contractors working at the home earlier in the day.
