BALDWIN PARK — A large fire at an apartment building destroyed an apartment Sunday, sending smoke billowing over the San Gabriel Valley.

The fire was reported at 1:22 p.m. at a two-story apartment building in the 3400 block of Baldwin Park Boulevard, Los Angeles County Fire Department dispatch supervisor Clyde Taylor said.

Firefighters arrived to find “heavy smoke and fire” coming from the first floor of the building, she said.

One bottom-floor unit was destroyed in the fire, while the unit directly above sustained minor damage, Los Angeles County Fire Department Capt. Dan Gordon said.

Firefighters were able to douse the blaze at 1:44 p.m., Taylor said.

No injuries were reported.

The blaze caused an estimated $175,000 worth of damage, Gordon said.

The cause remained under investigation, however officials were focusing on electrical wiring in the bathroom of the first-floor apartment, where the fire appeared to have originated.

A couple living in the upstairs unit found their own accommodations, while the Red Cross was summoned to help the family residing in the gutted apartment find temporary lodging.
