Covina man accused of slashing neighbor with razor during dispute

A man was behind bars Saturday on suspicion of slashing a friend in the chest with a razor blade during an argument, authorities said.
Santiago Nava-Valdez, 43, was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon in connection with Friday’s 9:40 p.m. attack in the 16700 block of Bellbrook Street, in an unincorporated county area near Covina.
The victim, initially described only as a man, was treated at a hospital for a moderate slash wound to his chest, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. Andy Berg said.
The suspect and victim were acquaintances who both live in the neighborhood, Berg said. The men became involved in an argument.
As the argument escalated into a fight, Nava-Valdez pulled a razor blade-type knife and slashed the victim, the lieutenant said.
He was still at the scene when deputies arrived and was taken into custody, officials said. A knife was recovered from the scene.
According to county booking records, Nava Valdez was being held in lieu of $30,000 bail pending his scheduled arraignment Tuesday in West Covina Superior Court.
