A Moreno Valley man was behind bars Sunday on suspicion of crimes including attempted murder of a peace officer after shooting at California Highway Patrol officers during a high-speed chase on the 60 Freeway.

Isaac Arriaga, 28, was being held in lieu of $1.02 million bail at the Los Angeles County sheriff’s Industry Station in connection with Saturday’s wild pursuit, according to county booking records. 

Arriaga is accused of shooting two CHP cars as they pursued him down the 60 Freeway in Rowland Heights, CHP Officer Christian Cracraft said. One of the bullets punctured the gas tank of one of the patrol cars, however no officers were hurt.

Officers ultimately arrested Arriaga following a brief stand-off on the freeway near Hacienda Boulevard in Hacienda Heights shortly after 2 p.m., officials said.

The chase began in San Bernardino County when sheriff’s deputies spotted him driving a 2004 Land Rover Discovery that was wanted in connection with a carjacking, CHP officials said in a written statement.

Deputies turned the chase over to the CHP as it headed onto the 60 Freeway and into Los Angeles County.

“During the pursuit, the suspect vehicle reached speeds in excess of 100 mph,” according to the CHP statement.

Shortly after firing on officers, the Land Rover became disabled just east of Hacienda Boulevard, authorities said. Minutes later, Arriaga surrendered.

All westbound lanes of the 60 Freeway were shut down for several hours as the CHP investigated the crime scene — a 5-mile stretch of road east of Hacienda Boulevard. All lanes were not reopened until about 8 p.m.

Arriaga was scheduled to appear in West Covina Superior Court Tuesday for an arraignment.
