Deputy injured in Pico Rivera car crash

PICO RIVERA — A deputy was injured Thursday after his patrol car was broad-sided by a civilian vehicle that ran a red light, authorities said.
The crash took place about 2:45 p.m. at Whittier Boulevard and Durfee Avenue, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. John Kepley said.
The deputy suffered injuries to his neck, back and shoulder, though he wasn’t believed to be seriously hurt, the lieutenant said. A woman driving the civilian car involved in the crash was not hurt.
Both vehicles sustained significant damage in the collision, he added.
The deputy was southbound on Durfee Avenue when, according to witnesses and the civilian driver herself, the civilian vehicle went through a red light on eastbound Whittier Boulevard and struck his patrol car broadside, Kepley said.
The patrol car was on routine patrol and was not traveling with emergency lights and sirens activated, he added.
