COVINA — A fire destroyed an SUV parked in a carport beneath an apartment building Thursday but firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze before it did serious damage to the building above, authorities said.
A Ford Expedition parked beneath two floors of apartment units caught fire about 10:45 a.m. at a large apartment complex in the 19100 block of East Covina Boulevard, just east of Grand Avenue, Los Angeles County Fire Department Battalion Chief Stan Brawer said.
Residents tried to battle the flames with fire extinguishers, however the SUV was “fully involved” with fire upon firefighters’ arrival, Brawer said.
Officials doused the fire in about five minutes, before it could cause significant damage to the structure above, he added.

While one unit in the large apartment complex appeared charred from the outside, Brawer said the interior remained intact, and the residents would not need to be displaced.
One woman was treated at the scene for minor smoke inhalation, officials said.
Officials estimated the fire caused about $25,000 worth of damage to the SUV and structure. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
