6 family members injured, 2 seriously, in minivan rollover on the 10 Freeway near San Dimas

SAN DIMAS — Six Ontario family members ranging in age from 5 to 62 were injured, two of them severely, when a minivan crashed on the 10 Freeway near San Dimas early Saturday, authorities said.
A 21-year-old woman and a 5-year-old boy were hospitalized with major injuries following the 6:20 a.m. crash on the westbound 10, just east of Holt Avenue, in an unincorporated county area near San Dimas, according to California Highway Patrol Sgt. Steve Licon. A 62-year-old woman who was driving the minivan, as well as children ages 9, 12 and 17 were also hospitalized with injuries believed to be minor.
The 2006 Buick Terraza was driving on the 10 Freeway at about 80 mph with a deflated rear tire prior to the crash, officials said.
“As (the driver) continued westbound, she lost control of her vehicle and it struck the metal guard rail along the right shoulder,” Licon said. “The Terraza overturned onto its roof with guard rail protruding into the passenger compartment area, pinning in the 5-year-old passenger.”
Good Samaritans stopped at the scene of the wreck to help, officials said.
They managed to lift the minivan off of the guard rail, “However, the vehicle rolled down the embankment approximately 20 feet, with the passengers still inside,” the sergeant said.
Firefighters and CHP officers freed the family from the vehicle, said Capt. Esteban Rodriguez of the West Covina Fire Department, which joined Los Angeles County firefighters in the rescue.
Rescuers had to cut the vehicle open to free the injured women, he added.
Any witnesses to the crash are encouraged to contact the Baldwin Park office of the CHP at 626- 338-1164, or after hours, the Los Angeles Communications Center can be reached at 323-982-4800.
