La Puente couple killed in 60 Freeway crash identified

INDUSTRY — Authorities have released the names of a La Puente couple who died Thursday in a crash on the 60 Freeway in Industry.
Chi Duc Hoang, 63, and Lily My Hoang Tu, 57, were pronounced dead at the scene of the 1:15 p.m. crash on the transition road connecting the southbound 605 Freeway to the eastbound 60 Freeway, Los Angeles County Department of Coroner Assistant Chief of Operations Ed Winter said. They were believed to be married.
Chi Hoang was driving a 2001 Nissan Sentra on the transition road at an unknown speed prior to the crash, with Lily Hoang as a passenger, according to California Highway Patrol Sgt. Doris Peniche.
For reasons that remained under investigation, Chi Hoang lost control of the car, which veered to the left and into the number four lane of traffic on the eastbound 60, the officer said.
The car ended up directly in the path of a big rig, which struck the side of Nissan, officials said. The Nissan continued out of control into the path of another vehicle, a pickup truck, which also struck the car before it slammed into the right shoulder wall, Peniche said.
The big rig driver, a 47-year-old Hesperia man, and the driver of the pickup truck, a 72-year-old Los Angeles man, were unhurt.
The investigation is being carried out by the East Los Angeles office of the CHP.
