Police: Would be carjacker arrested in Covina, couldn’t figure out how to start hybrid car

COVINA – A man became angry with an acquaintance, punched him in the face, forced him out of his car and tried to carjack the vehicle Tuesday, police said.

He tried to get away in the hybrid vehicle around 9:10 a.m. at Barranca Avenue and Covina Boulevard but was arrested after he was unable to start the car, according to Covina police Lt. Tim Doonan.

While the suspect tried to figure out how to start the car, he said the acquaintance hitched a ride with a passing vehicle and came to the police station to report the incident.

Officers located the suspect in a nearby parking lot after he had walked eastbound on Covina Boulevard.

Phillip Osuna, 19, of Covina was arrested on suspicion of attempted carjacking. Booking records show he is being held at Twin Towers Correctional Facility in lieu of $100,000 bail.

Osuna will be arraigned Thursday at West Covina Superior Court.
