Man seriously injured in 10 Freeway crash in West Covina

WEST COVINA — A man suffered major injuries and his passenger suffered moderate injuries Friday after their compact car was rear-ended by a pickup truck while it was disabled on the 10 Freeway, authorities said.
The crash was reported just after noon on the westbound 10 Freeway, just east of Sunset Avenue, California Highway Patrol Officer Kerri Rivas said in a written statement.
A 31-year-old Los Angeles man was the driver of a 1995 Toyota Corolla that was disabled in the right-hand lane due to a mechanical problem, Rivas said. A 22-year-old Fontana woman was a passenger in the Toyota.
A 30-year-old West Covina man was approaching from behind at 65 to 70 mph in a 2000 Toyota Tundra pickup, which struck the rear of the stopped Corolla, the officer said.
West Covina firefighters had to cut the man and woman free from the badly damaged Corolla, she said. The driver was hospitalized with “major bodily trauma,” while his female passenger suffered minor to moderate injuries.
The pickup truck driver appeared to have suffered only minor injuries in the crash, Rivas said.
No arrests were made at the scene. The crash is being investigated by officers from the Baldwin Park office of the CHP.
The two right lanes of the westbound freeway, as well as the westbound offramp to Sunset Avenue, were  blocked for about 45 minutes as a result of the crash, officials said.
