PASADENA — An arsonist lit a fire that destroyed and damaged several vehicles and a carport early Saturday, authorities said.
A passerby called 9-1-1 about 2 a.m. after spotting flames emanating from the 600 block of South Marengo Avenue, just south of California Boulevard, Pasadena Fire Department spokeswoman Lisa Derderian said.
The fire caused about $200,000 worth of damage to the carport and vehicles, officials said.
In additional to the damage to the carport, “Two vehicles were destroyed, and three were damaged significantly,” Derderian said.
An adjacent building — an architectural firm — sustained minor damage, Derderian said. About 20 nearby residents of nearby apartments were evacuated as firefighter extinguished the blaze, but all were able to return home a short time later.
It took about 15 minutes to douse the fire, she said.
Investigators determined it had been intentionally set, however police said no suspect information was available.

Fire officials declined specify how the arsonist set the blaze due to the ongoing investigation, Derderian said.
She credited the passerby who first reported the flames for helping firefighters get a handle on the blaze before it became much worse.
