Man and woman suspected in violent West Covina robbery

WEST COVINA — Detectives arrested a Baldwin Park man and a Corona woman late Saturday in connection with the violent robbery and sexual assault of a man at a West Covina at a motel earlier in the day, authorities said.
Anthony Alvarado, 32, of Baldwin Park and Jessica Contreras, 23, of Corona, were arrested at another motel in Covina following a day-long investigation, West Covina police Lt. Pat Benschop said. They were accused of crimes including robbery, kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, sexual assault and making criminal threats.
The victim was “badly beaten,” sexually assaulted and robbed of a small amount of money and some personal items, Benschop said. His injuries were described as serious, but not life-threatening.
The violent incident was reported about 8 a.m. at the Day’s Inn on Garvey Avenue South, between Citrus Street and Barranca Avenue.
Alvarado and Contreras attacked and robbed the man inside a rented room, Benschop said.
The victim told investigators he did not know the man and woman who attacked him, and it was unclear how or why the man was targeted in the crime, the lieutenant said. The investigation was ongoing.
According to county booking records, Alvarado was being held in lieu of $1 million pending his initial court appearance, while Contreras was jailed in lieu of $250,000 bail.<NO1><NO>
