WEST COVINA — More then 2,000 Southern California Edison in Covina and West Covina lost their electricity Saturday, and more than 1,300 of them didn’t get it back until Sunday afternoon.

The outage was due to a “catastrophic equipment failure and fire” just after 4 p.m. Saturday at a substation at Puente and Vincent avenues in West Covina, SCE officials said in a written statement.

About 700 of the initial 2,000 homes and businesses that lost power had it restored by 8 a.m. Sunday, SCE spokeswoman Vanessa McGrady said. The rest of the lights — and air conditioners — came back on about 2 p.m.

The boundaries of the outage were not available Sunday, nor was the cause of the fire at the substation.

Edison opened an ice and water distribution center at 11 a.m. Sunday at Palm View Park, 1340 Puente Ave., in West Covina to provide some relief to affected customers as temperatures climbed into the mid-80s.
