AZUSA – A Covina man in his early 50s suffered severe injuries Thursday when he was struck by a car while riding his bicycle in Azusa, police said.
The collision took place about 4:30 a.m. at Alosta and Citrus Avenues, according to Azusa police Sgt. Bruce Badoni.
The cyclist was northbound on Citrus Avenue, traveling through the intersection, when he was broad-sided by a Ford Focus heading eastbound on Alosta Avenue, Badoni said.
Rescuers took the badly injured man to a trauma center, where he was last reported to be in “stable, but guarded” condition, he said.
“At this time it is uncertain who failed to stop at the red light,” the lieutenant said in a written statement. “The collision is still under investigation, but it does not appear that speed was a contributing factor.”
The driver of the car, a young woman from Corona, was not hurt, officials said. No crime was initially suspected.
“No witnesses have been identified,” Badoni said. Anyone with information was asked to contact Azusa police Officer Eric Sanchez at 626-812-3207.
