IRWINDALE– ive people were hurt, one of them severely, following a multi-vehicle crash, authorities said.
The crash took place about 1:45 p.m. at Los Angeles Street and Azusa Canyon Road and involved two cars and two SUVs.
A man was driving and SUV eastbound on Los Angeles Street, approaching Azusa Canyon Road, when he apparently lost consciousness due to a medical condition, Los Angeles County Fire Department Capt. Gonzalo Salgado said.
The SUV collided with a Honda sedan containing a man, a woman and a young girl that was making it’s way north through the intersection, the captain said. All three occupants suffered apparently minor injuries.
The SUV continued out of control and struck another SUV parked along the north curb line of Los Angeles Street, as well as a man who was loading or unloading objects from the vehicle, according to Salgado.
The pedestrian ended up being run over by the out of control SUV, Salgado said. Paramedics rushed him to the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center trauma center, where his condition was not clear Sunday afternoon.
Before coming to a rest, the Honda involved in the crash spun into and clipped a Toyota Corolla stopped at a stop sign waiting to head south through the intersection.
Inside was Vanessa Becerra, 20, of Azusa and her 2-month-old daughter, Danielle Avila.
After rushing from the driver’s seat to check on her daughter, Becerra said she was relieved to see she was just fine.
“She didn’t even cry,” the mother said.
Becerra said the SUV that apparently caused the crash entered the intersection at high speed and showed no signs of slowing down before the impact.
The driver of that SUV appeared uninjured by the crash, though he was being treated for the medical issue that apparently led to it, Salgado said.
The crash is being investigated by the Irwindale Police Department, which provided no information Sunday afternoon.
