Man tries to kidnap toddler from mother at knifepoint in El Monte

EL MONTE — Police are seeking a man who tried to kidnap a toddler from his mother at knifepoint earlier this week.
The would-be kidnapper abandoned Tuesday’s attempted abduction after being startled by a passing bicyclist, El Monte police Lt. Dan Burlingham said.
A young woman was walking in the area of Valley Boulevard and Gibson Road with her 4-month old daughter and 2-year-old son when she was approached by a young Latino man, about 5 feet 9 inches tall, with brown hair, the lieutenant said.
“(He) put a knife to her back and demanded she turn over her son,” Burlingham said.
But a passing bicyclist scared the knife-wielding man off, and he was last seen running south on Gibson Road.
Anyone with information was asked to contact the El Monte Police Department at 626-580-2100.
