Body discovered alongside Azusa bike path

AZUSA — Hikers Wednesday discovered the badly decomposed of body an unidentified man along the San Gabriel River bike path at the northern edge of Azusa, authorities said.
The man remained listed as a John Doe Thursday, Los Angeles County Department of Coroner Assistant Chief of Operations Ed Winter said.
No approximate age or description was available, as the body was in an advanced stage of decomposition, Winter said. An autopsy was planned to determine how the man died.
Hikers reported finding the body about 3:40 p.m. in thick shrubs along the bike trail, which runs adjacent to the San Gabriel River and the 1700 block of San Gabriel Canyon Road, Azusa police Sgt. Andy Sutcliffe said.
There was no obvious cause of death apparent, the sergeant added.
The body “appeared to have been there for an extended period of time,” Sutcliffe said.
No further details were available.
The investigation was being handled by Azusa police detectives and coroner’s officials.
